How it's calculated
Duty is charged on the CIF value (purchase + freight and insurance). VAT or import tax is charged on CIF plus duty. Broker fees are charged on CIF. Some countries use a different base: if your broker uses another formula, adjust the percentages until the total matches their quote.
If you are a registered importer, import VAT can often be credited back later. Check with your accountant.
